about

During the early onset of the recent plague, many of us had the misfortune to need to visit our local social security office (called Centrelink in Australia) and got to witness first hand what an awful, dehumanising, Byzantine process people must daily endure just to put bread on the table or pay their rent. This entire song was written literally while waiting in the various lines and queues.

lyrics

What a Way to Waste A Beautiful Day

Standing near the front line watching all the faces waiting
Staring at a long line waiting for a way to get in
Just to sit down.. oh and wait your turn
To be next in line to find a way to pay the rent
Oh what a way to waste a beautiful day..... (what a way..)

We could be working in a coal mine working for a way to get out
We could be working down a hole trying to find a way to get up
But there’s no way... no way there from here!
Standing in a long line waiting for a way to get in
To find out if we can make it through the day..
Oh what a way to waste a beautiful day..... (what a way..)

Standing near the front line watching all the faces turn grey
Waiting for a lifeline just to make it through the day
And counting down oh if you can make it... at all..

Standing in a long line waiting for a way to get in
To find out oh if you can make it…
Oh what a way to waste a beautiful day…..
Standing in a long line waiting for a way to get in
To find out oh if we can make it
Oh what a way to waste a beautiful day.....
What a way..

What a way!
Living on the breadline, living day to day,
Living hand to mouth, standing in a line
Trying to find a way to pay the rent, oh yeah

Oh what a way to waste a beautiful day
Oh what a way to waste a beautiful day
Oh what a way to waste a beautiful day.....
